Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for an Industrial Hygienist (Health Physicist) I or II position. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Senior Vice President for University Services at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service.

Responsibilities of this position include assisting with the coordination and planning of a comprehensive radiation safety program to recognize, eliminate and control occupational health hazards; supporting implementation of workplace safety programs by collecting samples for analysis; waste management, maintaining analytical equipment, calibrations, investigating adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting and other conditions that may affect employee health, comfort, or efficiency.

These responsibilities will include direct interaction with campus biological, chemical and radiological laboratories. Further, this position will perform duties in accordance with established guidelines and associated regulations, such as Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), OSHA compliance, accident investigation and reporting, workplace safety inspections, regulatory compliance audits, and development and administration of safety training.

In addition to the above duties, the Health Physicist II will be expected to implement workplace safety programs through promotions and interaction with ISU research staff. The Health Physicist at this level will implement evidence-based and engaging training programs while assisting with database management, to include basic programming.

The successful candidate will possess effective written and oral communication skills along with the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external customers. The candidate will be able to work independently as well as with a team. Outstanding attention to detail, and strong organizational and multitasking skills will be essential for effectively performing simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use personal computers along with a variety of software to maintain hazardous materials information and related reports.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

The above requirements are for the Industrial Hygienist I.

Industrial Hygienist II:
Bachelors’s degree and 1 year related experience.

For either position:
Relevant experience includes one or more of the following areas: laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, general safety, biosafety, radiation safety, regulatory compliance or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Biology/Molecular/Microbiology, Plant Pathology,
Occupational Safety/Health, Health Physics, or related field.

Technical training covering OSHA, EPA, NFPA or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards.

Experience developing and administering safety training.

Demonstrated experience working within a laboratory environment.

Experience with spreadsheets and relational databases.

Experience working at a college, university or research
