Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Communications Specialist position. This position will be filled as either a Communications Specialist II or III. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Senior Vice President for Business and Finance (SVBF) at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service.

Responsibilities of this position include developing training courses and visual communications to promote safety and EH&S services to the university campus. These responsibilities include photography; course development and graphic design.

In addition to the above duties, the Communications Specialist III will further develop a communications strategy and provide a higher level of leadership and consultation to include developing training courses and visual communications to promote safety and EH&S services to the university campus. Responsibilities will include photography and video production; course development; graphic design; social media management, staff training; maintenance of media equipment; and client support for the learning management system.

The successful candidate will have the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external customers and establish professional campus and community relationships through effective written and oral communication; strong problem solving capabilities along with the ability to work independently as well as with a team; and excellent organizational and multitasking skills to handle a variety of simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use personal computers along with a variety of software expertise.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

The above requirements are for the Communications Specialist II.

Communications Specialist III:
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

For either position:
Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: communications and publications, public relations, marketing, education or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Education, Communications or a suitable equivalent.

Technical training covering OSHA, EPA, NFPA or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards.

Experience developing and administering safety training.

Experience with spreadsheets and relational databases.

Work related experience at a college, university or research institution.
