Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) at Iowa State University invites nominations and applications for faculty positions as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the broad area of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering. Candidates with expertise in Engineering Statistics/Data Science, Advanced Manufacturing, or Complex Systems Engineering are preferred.

Candidates will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, establish and sustain strong research programs in their area of expertise, act as adviser to graduate students and undergraduate student research, and provide service to the department, college, and university.

The successful applicants will be participating in all aspects of the department’s mission, including developing a strong externally funded research program, teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participating in service to the university.

Required Education and Experience

Assistant Professor:
An earned Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or a closely related field by the appointment start date

Demonstrated potential for funded research and excellence in teaching in their area of expertise

Associate Professor/Full Professor:
In addition to the above qualifications, for consideration at the Associate or Full Professor level, applicants must meet the University standards for appointment to the rank including a demonstrated record of funded research
and excellence in teaching in their area of expertise.

Preferred Education and Experience

For applicants in the Engineering Statistics/Data Analytics area, the following additional qualifications are preferred:
Demonstrated potential for theoretical contributions and practical experience in engineering statistics and/or data analytics.

For applicants in the Advanced Manufacturing area, the following additional qualifications are preferred:
Research in advanced manufacturing processes, sensing and control, or automation. Experience with industrial partners/applications in the form of research or practice.

For applicants in the Complex Systems Engineering area, the following additional qualifications are preferred:
Modeling and analysis for sensor-based data rich systems
Experience with industrial partners/applications in the form of research or practice.

Department/Program & College Description

The IMSE department has a history of excellence in advanced manufacturing, classical engineering statistics (including reliability, experimental design and analysis, statistical metrology, and process control), operations research and analytics, human factors and ergonomics, systems engineering and engineering management.

The IMSE department has over 27,000 square feet of centrally located space. It has invested over $3M in manufacturing labs in the last eight years. Manufacturing researchers in IMSE are actively participating in three institutes established by National Network for Manufacturing Innovation.

The department has collaborations in all of these areas across the Engineering College and University. The ISU College of Engineering comprises eight departments with 230+ tenure/tenure-track faculty members and annual research expenditures exceeding $94 million.

U.S. News and World Report ranks the IMSE graduate program 24th in the U.S. and 16th among public universities while the College of Engineering is ranked in the top 25 among public universities and is one of the ten largest undergraduate engineering programs in the U.S. Unique facilities at Iowa State include the Ames Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, and interdisciplinary centers of excellence such as the Wind Energy Initiative, Industrial Assessment Center (IAC), Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE), and the Center for Industrial Research and Services (CIRAS).
