Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Agriculture and Natural Resources program with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking applications for an Extension Program Specialist – Field Crop Pollination Entomology.

The Extension Program Specialist will work closely with the field crop extension entomology program and assist with program planning and coordination, creation and delivery of communication and outreach materials, publications, evaluation, and reporting related to field crop entomology and pollinator conservation. The incumbent will assist with the development of applied pest management curriculum for extension programs with a focus on honey bee and wild bee health; facilitate improved communication and social media relations with beekeepers, farmers, ag businesses, and entomology professionals; and initiate research projects while collecting and summarizing data findings within the field of study.

The Extension Program Specialist will assist with farmer and stakeholder education in the target areas of beekeeping, wild bee conservation, and field crop entomology through the creation and delivery of presentations. The incumbent will work with ISU Research Farms and participate in on-farm demonstrations and research related to corn and soybean IPM. The Extension Program Specialist will leverage these resources and established relationships to engage beekeepers and farmers on their farms and exploring new practices through research projects.

The Extension Program Specialist III will be expected to create and deliver comprehensive and complex communications and outreach materials; identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients’ needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary curriculum; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals and groups. The incumbent will be expected to work effectively both individually and in team settings and have the ability to develop strong working relationships with Iowa State University faculty and staff as well as partners and clientele within the agricultural industry. To be successful in the position, the candidate will possess strong organizational skills, expertise in Microsoft Office, and the ability to multi-task.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

Degree in Entomology, Ecology, Agronomy or closely related field.

Experience with developing extension curriculum and materials.

Experience collecting and presenting research data to a range of audiences.

Experience in field crop entomology with an emphasis in integrated pest management.

Experience with social media and web content creation.

Experience with honey bees, beekeeping, and/or wild bees.

Experience developing and implementing surveys.
