Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Writing and Media Center (WMC) serves a land-grant institution with over 36,000 undergraduate and graduate students, operating year-round to conduct approximately 5,000 in-person consultations each year. The Writing and Media Center employs a full-time Intercultural Learning Specialist and over 50 undergraduate and graduate student colleagues.

The Writing and Media Center, a unit of the Dean of Students Office at Iowa State University, seeks an Assistant Director to manage the daily operations of the main center and two satellite locations; schedule staff; manage payroll; assist with tutor education; develop and teach workshops; conduct outreach presentations; assist with advertising; update the website; maintain an active research agenda in writing center studies; and teach one course in the English Department per calendar year.

The successful candidate will possess knowledge and experience in writing center theory, practice, and administration; experience teaching first-year composition; evidence of effective teaching, including facilitating discussions; strong presentation skills; adeptness at communicating to large audiences; strong organizational skills; close attention to detail; experience coordinating the logistics of projects that necessitate collaboration between colleagues; the ability to develop, build, and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues; experience with assessment projects; strong decision-making and problem-solving skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; intercultural competence; and a somewhat flexible schedule to accommodate select evening and weekend events.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 6 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

A minimum of a Master’s degree in English (any sub-discipline) or a relevant field is required for this position.

Preferred Education and Experience

PhD in English (any sub-discipline) or MFA in Creative Writing

College teaching experience in a writing-intensive discipline

Tutoring experience

Administrative experience

Supervision experience
