Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

An NIH-funded post-doctoral position is open in the laboratory of Dr. Thomas Bobik at Iowa State University to conduct research on bacterial microcompartments (MCPs). Bacterial MCPs are a family of proteinaceous organelles used to optimize metabolic pathways that have toxic or volatile intermediates. MCPs have a number of potential biomedical and biotechnological applications, but many fundamental questions about their structure, function and mechanisms remain unanswered and only a few types of MCPs have been studied in any detail. The lab’s current focus is to use genetic and biochemical approaches to define the mechanisms that guide the assembly of thousands of protein subunits into a functioning bacterial organelle and to understand how a protein shell mediates selective molecular transport. For more information on Dr. Bobik’s research see: https://bbmb.iastate.edu/directory/tom-bobik/
