Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Sociology at Iowa State University seeks Lecturers to teach undergraduate Sociology, Criminal Justice and/or Women & Gender Studies courses for Fall 2017 and/or Spring 2018 and/or Summer 2018.

Courses may include but are not limited to: Soc 219 Intimate Relationships; Soc 230 Rural Society; Soc 235 Social Problems; Soc 305 Social Pysch; Soc 310 Community; Soc 327 Sex & Gender in Society; Soc 380 Sociology of Work; Soc 382 Environmental Sociology; CJST 351 Police & Society; CJSt 352 Punishment, Corrections & Society. WS 201 Intro to Women’s Studies; or WS 301 Women & Gender International.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Sociology, Criminology, Women’s Studies or related field;

College/University teaching experience or other teaching/instruction experience related to field.

Preferred Education and Experience

PhD in Sociology, Criminology, Women’s Studies or related field.

Experience teaching one or more of the listed courses.

Department/Program & College Description

The Sociology Department’s ( current and future research, teaching, and extension scholarship is centered on creating new knowledge and preparing the next generation of scientists, teachers, professionals, and citizens to apply sociological skills to societal challenges. The Department has a pedagogical mission to prepare undergraduate and graduate students with skills to launch professional careers that address the major challenges of society and engage in civic life as well-educated global citizens. These skills include an understanding of the social and structural interconnectedness of society, spatial and institutional relationships, a wide variety of scientific methodologies, quantitative analytics, effective communication skills, and leadership. The Department’s scholarship of learning, discovery, and engagement are clustered around three areas 1) Sociology of Agriculture and Development, 2) Criminology and Criminal Justice, and 3) Social and Economic Disparities.
The Department has an established reputation for excellence in rural sociology and criminology which provides a unique opportunity for the incoming chair to build upon existing programs. There are 20 tenured/tenure track faculty in the department which, over the past five years, has received 99 external awards totaling $36.5 million to conduct domestic and international research, extension, and/or education projects.
