Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of family economic wellbeing. We seek candidates who are dedicated to producing high quality research, teaching, and service/outreach and are interested in joining a dynamic multidisciplinary faculty. Position responsibilities include: maintaining a focused program of research and publication, seeking external funding, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising graduate students, and contributing to the university’s land-grant mission.

Required Education and Experience

Doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies, Family/Consumer/Household Economics, Financial Counseling/Planning, or related fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Behavioral Finance, and Public Policy.

In addition, an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires an established record of scholarly publications and external funding appropriate for a research university dedicated to its land-grant mission.

An applicant who has not completed the doctoral program must include documentation indicating the likelihood of completion by date of hire.

Department/Program & College Description

The Human Development and Family Studies program at Iowa State University offers two graduate degrees: a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. Graduate study in HDFS is multidisciplinary and focuses on applied research, intervention and prevention practice in several content areas such as family economic wellbeing and financial planning, adolescent/youth development, adult development and aging, family studies and policy, health and wellbeing, infant and child development, and lifespan development. HDFS offers Bachelor of Science degrees in: Financial Counseling and Planning; Child, Adult and Family Services; Early Childhood Education; and Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies. The department has a nationally recognized Extension and Outreach program. The department houses a financial counseling clinic, a child development lab school, and a child welfare research and training project. Candidates with research interests that intersect with the work of these entities are encouraged to apply.
