Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is accepting applications for certified Veterinary Technicians at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.

This position provides care and assistance to patients under the supervision of Clinicians and House Officers at the Iowa State University Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. Responsibilities include supervising and assisting students to complete tasks and develop daily planning for the service. This position will also cross train with other technician positions throughout the hospital and fill in if needed in other areas.

The successful candidate will possess multi-tasking skills to manage patients and students, demonstrate attention to detail for managing cases, and possess excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients, clients, referring veterinarians, faculty, interns and residents, and staff members.

Basic veterinary technician skills are expected, including but not limited to, venipuncture, peripheral intravenous catheter placement, performing basic physical exams, knowledge of appropriate species normal vitals, and appropriate animal restraint. Some familiarity with the common veterinary equipment such as blood pressure monitors, EKG machines, and gas anesthesia machines are also necessary. Some exposure to the more advanced skills such as urinary catheter placement, more developed triage skills, challenging patient restraint ability, multiple site capability for IVC placement, etc.

Required Qualifications

1. Associates degree in a veterinary technology program from an accredited institution, and
2. Successful completion of the veterinary technician certification, registration, or license within one year of the start date.

- Veterinary Technician Specialist.
- Clinical experience with small and large animal services.
- Experience with Microsoft Office
- Academic experience working with animals
- Experience within a veterinary practice and/or research related facility as a veterinary technician.
- Front office experience which demonstrates communication skills
- Record keeping experience, such as inventory, treatment sheets, lab logs, equipment, etc.
- Supervisory experience
- Laboratory experience with PCV, TP, chemistries, etc.
- Experience with equipment monitors, such as IV pumps, syringe pumps, Pulse Ox, Doppler’s, ECG units, etc.
-Animal husbandry experience to include overall care and/or nutrition of animals.
-Experience with medical technical procedures, such as, IV’s or urinary catheter placement, venipuncture, etc.
