Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Iowa State University College of Engineering seeks a Director for the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE), an internationally recognized center for R&D in NDE established in 1985. This position will report to the Associate Dean for Research. The Director will hold a tenured faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor and will teach in relevant department(s) in the College of Engineering.

Working with outstanding personnel, the CNDE Director will provide the creative vision and leadership for the center to advance the scientific and engineering R&D program, grow the education and technology-transfer programs on and off campus, and expand future funding opportunities through current and new industrial business and government partners, while increasing the center’s influence and already high visibility. CNDE draws from expertise across campus and maintains strong ties to industry, other academic institutions and to the Ames Laboratory, a U.S. DOE National Laboratory on the ISU campus.

Required Education and Experience

-Doctorate in science or engineering discipline
-Demonstrated record of related NDE R&D accomplishments
-Grant/contract successes (acquisition and execution)
-Demonstrated expertise in planning, leading and growing successful multi-investigator research initiatives

-National prominence and international reputation in the NDE community
-Record of visionary leadership in NDE.
-Collaborate successfully with government, industry and academic partners/sponsors, including advisory boards, review panels and/or national working groups
-Strong interpersonal and communication skills
-Ability to work with a diverse staff and clientele
- Demonstrated ability to manage R&D and supervise technical researchers

Department/Program & College Description

The Center for NDE was established as an NSF IUCRC in 1985 and it graduated in January 2016. It is comprised of about 20 active professional researchers (P&S Staff), faculty, post-docs and typically engages with about 50 students. It has annual research expenditures of about $3M. CNDE values interdisciplinary collaborative R&D programs, engaging multiple academic departments and a broad spectrum of industries. CNDE focuses on four themes: Advanced NDE methods, Material state Awareness including additive manufacturing, digital NDE, and structural health monitoring. The center is aligned with the broader College of Engineering strategic objectives. Several members of the center are active in courses which comprise the NDE Minor, it hosts the NDT Resource Center (a web based resource) and together with QNDE Programs, organizes the Annual Review of Progress in Quantitative NDE. The Center is located in the Applied Sciences Complex and has about $8M in equipment.
