Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Art and Visual Culture in the College of Design at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Scientific Visualization and Digital Media starting August 16, 2018. We are seeking a candidate to teach and develop an innovative curriculum that covers emerging and established technologies for the Integrated Studio Arts (BA, BFA, MFA) and Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration (BA) programs.

The successful candidate will have an active art practice and/or research program in Scientific Visualization/Digital Media and is an innovator in their field. We welcome applications from candidates with backgrounds in art, design, and/or the sciences. Teaching expectations include up to five (5) undergraduate or graduate level courses in the application of digital media to visualization techniques for the Integrated Studio Arts and Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration programs. Responsibilities will also include maintaining an active art practice and/or research schedule, student advisement, and departmental, college, and university committee service.

Required Education and Experience

MFA in fine/visual/studio arts; or BFA in fine/visual/studio arts + masters in related discipline; or advanced degree in related field

Preferred Education and Experience

• Teaching experience in digital media and visualization areas.
• Curriculum development experience
• Demonstrated ability to distill complex content for effective visual presentation.
• Experienced and adept collaborator with subject matter expertise in the sciences.
• Demonstrated knowledge of visual conventions applied to a variety of subsets of art, science, and design.
• Demonstrated expertise in traditional and digital techniques and well-versed in visual communication principles.
• Demonstrated technical proficiency in interaction design, time-based and interactive media development, including website and application creation experience.
• Ability to demonstrate application of visualizations to advance and promote scientific understanding.

The Department of Art and Visual Culture (AVC) is one of seven distinguished departments within the College, along with Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture.
