Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Landscape Architecture within the College of Design at Iowa State University seeks a colleague who will sustain and enrich our nationally-ranked and internationally recognized degree programs through innovative scholarship and teaching in the area of landscape technologies. Iowa State University has recently made a commitment to advance grand challenges to pursue “ambitious but achievable goals that harness science, technology and innovation to solve important national or global problems and that have the potential to capture the public’s imagination.” The Department of Landscape Architecture invites applicants for a tenure-track position to help lead the way in advancing novel technologies and methods, in which new forms of knowledge can be constructed. Landscape change continues to generate radically new environmental, social, economic and political conditions. Our ability to address contemporary problems is dependent on our skill and ability to formulate new questions and experiment with new frameworks of research. To do this requires creative and collaborative talent from which new transdisciplinary investigations can be supported and pursued. This call for a tenure-track position builds upon the university’s and the department’s strengths to address such grand challenges.

The department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2018, with a strong background in the foundations and principles of design and the ability to contribute to teaching fundamental design studios at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will also teach required and elective courses in the area of landscape technologies (for example: construction, plants, representation, ecology, sustainability) within the graduate and undergraduate curricula, consistent with teaching loads typically assigned in the department. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in original scholarly research and/or creative work and to disseminate this work through an appropriate peer-review process. As a good citizen of the department, the successful candidate will join the faculty in the shared governance of the landscape architecture programs, the department, the college and the university.
