Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Iowa Crop Improvement (ICIA) at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for an Assistant Scientist III to coordinate and manage field research and seed laboratory projects, and provide supervision and oversight for the Iowa Crop Performance Tests (ICPT) for corn and soybeans. ICPT Corn & Soybean is the largest public variety testing program in the Midwest. It consists of testing hundreds of hybrids and varieties in multiple tests at 30-35 sites, reaching 25-30,000 plots annually.

This position will conduct field experiments throughout Iowa, collect phenotypic data from planting through harvest, and analyze, summarize, report, and publish results of unbiased crop performance data. This position will also coordinate and manage phytosanitary field inspections for the state of Iowa. Phytosanitary field inspections play a vital role in the seed industry and are integral to the international shipment of seed. Other duties for this position include supervision of students and the hiring, training, and management of up to 20 field inspectors.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to work both independently and as a team player, strong organizational skills and the ability to continually learn and stay updated on emerging industry techniques and methods.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or a Ph.D. or other professional degree and related experience.

•MS in agriculture or agricultural science or related field, preferably Agronomy or Pathology.
•Course work in plant breeding and statistics.
•Experience that demonstrates extensive knowledge of crop production techniques, research methodologies, and data management.
•Plot experience.
•Experience diagnosing common crop pathogens.
•Experience in analysis, writing, and reporting in field research.
•Farm/facility management and personnel supervision.

All accrued vacation must be taken during the term of this appointment. Unused vacation will be forfeited.
