Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University seeks applicants for a faculty position with responsibilities in beef cow-calf extension and outreach, research and teaching. This is a 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The responsibilities will be 60% extension and outreach, 25% applied research and 15% teaching. The successful candidate is expected to provide leadership in development of an effective extension education program serving the needs of the Iowa cow-calf industry. Research responsibilities will include the development of an applied research program that is relevant to the Iowa cow-calf industry. Teaching responsibilities include a senior-level undergraduate course in cow-calf business management. In addition, there is an expectation that the candidate will work with faculty in the department to contribute to a dynamic curriculum in beef production.

Areas of expertise should be one of the following: cow herd nutrition and management, applied beef reproduction, forage or pasture management, animal breeding and genetics or beef systems management to address the cow-calf industry on a holistic basis. Additional responsibilities will include working in cross-disciplinary teams with faculty in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as the staff of the Iowa Beef Center to provide professional development and serve as a resource for regional beef extension program specialists.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems and develop programs, the ability to communicate effectively in writing and instruction of students and extension clientele, and ability to secure extramural funding.

Required Education and Experience

Applicants must have a PhD, by start date, in Animal Science or related discipline and experience in relevant beef production systems.

Preferred Education and Experience

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated the following :
1) ability to develop and deliver extension education programs in beef cow-calf production and management systems;
2) applied research effectiveness;
3) teaching effectiveness; and
4) ability to secure extramural funding.
