Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Division of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for qualified Postdoctoral Research Associates for the following
projects:
• Caloric Materials Consortium (CaloriCool®) – The ongoing early-stage applied research will create enduring foundational capabilities across the national laboratory system that will lead to caloric-cooling technologies adopted across a broad spectrum of applications within a decade. Positions are available in the areas of High-throughput Materials Development and Informatics.

High-throughput Materials Development: Responsibilities include discovery and design of novel magnetocaloric and elastocaloric materials, their processing to improve cyclic stability and performance, scale-up of syntheses, and technology transfer. Examples include transition-metal- and lanthanide-metal-based alloys and intermetallic compounds exhibiting magnetic or/and martensitic transformations.

Informatics: Responsibilities include interfacing combined data from both algorithm and codes (theory) and experiment with both internal and external (e.g., Citrine or Granta) materials data tools along with advancing physics-based machine-learning capabilities to accelerate materials discovery with validation in partnership with high-throughput materials development experimental efforts. This position will work with various electronic-structure techniques, such as plane-wave and all-electron full-potential methods, and thermodynamic methods, but with principal focus on informatics side. This position will utilize object-oriented and parallel programming in Fortran and C/ C++, in addition to shell scripting, compilers and debuggers, version control tools, as well as data management tools and database control languages.

• Extraordinary Responsive Magnetic Rare Earth Materials – The ongoing basic research is to uncover the underlying electronic, atomic and microscopic interactions that result in an extraordinarily strong coupling between the magnetic and crystal lattices, and remarkable responsiveness of some rare earth intermetallic materials to temperature, pressure, and magnetic field. Responsibilities include state-of-the-art synthesis, processing and characterization integrated with theory, modeling and computations to understand and manipulate the responsiveness of materials that are sufficiently complex to facilitate control at length scales ranging from electronic interactions to atomic, nano- and microstructural scales, yet remain simple enough to develop predictive modeling tools.

Required Education and Experience

Ph.D. must be completed prior to start date.

Ph.D. in Theoretical or Experimental: Materials Science, Chemistry, Condensed Matter Physics, or closely-related discipline with specializations in metallic functional materials.

Preferred Education and Experience

• Experience which demonstrates knowledge with caloric materials; magnetic materials; rare earth materials, or shape memory materials.
• Experience which demonstrates knowledge with electronic-structure methods development, coding, and application of such methods, as it is a principle R&D component.
• Experience which demonstrates knowledge using databases and modern data use paradigms, as well as physics-based machine-learning activities.
