Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Aerospace Engineering ( at Iowa State University invites applications for the position of Vance and Arlene Coffman Department Chair. The chair is responsible for the scope and effectiveness of the teaching, research and outreach efforts of the department. Candidates are expected to have an excellent record of achievement in research, teaching and service at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor.

Required Education and Experience

• PhD or equivalent terminal degree in aerospace engineering or related area
• Excellent record of achievement in research, teaching and service at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor at Iowa State University

Department/Program & College Description

The aerospace engineering department is nationally recognized for its research and teaching offering BS, MS, and PhD degrees. The department has an ABET accredited undergraduate program in aerospace engineering and graduate programs in aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics. The department has research strengths in advanced mechanics of materials systems; aerodynamics, combustion and aero-structural interaction; complex systems and optimization; guidance, controls and aerodynamics; and non-destructive evaluation and testing. The faculty is comprised of 25 full-time tenured/tenure-track, eight non-tenure eligible teaching, and one non-tenure eligible research faculty, 15 staff members, and approximately 930 undergraduate, and 130 graduate students. The College of Engineering includes eight departments, with over 230 tenure/tenure-track faculty members, and annual research expenditures exceeding $94 million. U.S. News and World Report ranks the college in the top 25 among public universities and is one of the ten largest undergraduate engineering programs in the U.S. Unique facilities at Iowa State include the Ames Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, and interdisciplinary centers of excellence such as the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE), Virtual Reality Application Center (VRAC), Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability, and the Asteroid Deflection Research Center.
