Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University invites applicants for a full-time faculty position at the open rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The Department of Architecture seeks candidates with a record of progressive research and teaching related to material science, assemblies, and their influence on building performance and practice. Candidates should be committed to advancing knowledge in theoretical and design research, ideally with a proficiency in computation, advanced / emerging materials, and/or contemporary considerations of adaptive assembly and systems. Teaching will include integrated design studios, graduate and undergraduate building technology courses (lectures & labs), as well as elective courses in the candidate’s area research specialization.

We are seeking a candidate whose expertise will enrich the promise of material practice within an exceptional architectural design and critical thinking department at one of the leading land-grant institutions in the US.

Required Education and Experience

-Candidates shall hold a terminal degree at a Masters or PhD level, or its equivalent, in Architecture or a related field.

For consideration to Associate Professor rank, applicants must meet, in addition to the above qualifications, the university standards for appointment to the rank and a strong national and international scholarly reputation.

-Evidence of, or the potential for, receiving external grant funding
-Demonstrated understanding of integrated teaching practice and delivery methods
-Evidence of critical studio pedagogy and the capacity to situate research expertise within a broader socio-cultural discourse

Department/Program & College Description

The Department of Architecture is home to a pedagogically rigorous and nationally-recognized building-technology curricular sequence. As a partner with the Center for Building Energy Research (CEBER), it has interdisciplinary links with multiple colleges and departments including material science and engineering.

The Department of Architecture offers two accredited degrees: Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture. It also offers a post-professional degree, Master of Science in Architecture. The Department of Architecture is housed within the College of Design alongside the Departments of Landscape Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Integrated Studio Arts. The Department is an active contributor to interdisciplinary programs within the college such as a shared first-year foundations curriculum, Bachelor of Design, Digital Media Minor, and Master of Design in Sustainable Environments
