Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a Scientist II position to be the principal investigator on an externally funded project from the National Science Foundation.

The duties include facilitating all communication between the co-Principal investigators at ISU and at the National Center for Genomics Research; designing and implementing sampling strategies for genome sequencing; studying domestication genomics; detecting interspecific introgression; determining patterns of linkage disequilibrium; determining patterns of genomic structural variation in different gene pools and species; serving as a go-between with independent companies that provide plant genomics services; directing post-doctoral research associates; being responsible for all compliance and reporting to the National Science Foundation; attending NSF meetings as the Principal Investigator; leading molecular evolutionary analyses; designing and directing the implementation of a robust publication strategy for all of the genome sequences generated; leading all molecular evolutionary and genetic and genomic analyses; preparing manuscripts for publication; shepherding manuscripts through the publication process; preparing follow-up research grant applications for continuation of the project beyond the funding period.

The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills; good interpersonal skills; the ability to work as part of a team; and the ability to prioritize various temporally interrelated tasks. Additionally, the successful candidate will have diverse scientific data analysis skills and basic statistical methodologies.

Required Education and Experience

Ph.D. or other professional degree and 7 years of related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

Doctoral degree in plant genomics, agronomy, or plant breeding.

Preferred Education and Experience

Record of successful acquisition of competitive external funding through grants and contracts as Principal Investigator and leadership in directing a funded project involving investigators at multiple institutions.

Demonstrated innovation in plant genomics and in bioinformatics.

Record of sustained peer-reviewed publication on cotton genomics, bioinformatics and evolution in top-tier scientific journals.

Expertise in cotton evolution, bioinformatics and genomics.
