Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is a $17 million research organization at Iowa State University that includes seven centers and seven programs. InTrans conducts transportation-related research and outreach, and addresses the education and workforce development needs of future transportation professionals. InTrans’ mission is to develop and implement innovative methods, materials, and technologies for improving transportation system efficiency, safety, reliability, and sustainability while improving the learning environment of students, faculty, and staff in transportation-related fields.

The individual in this position will serve as a Director I of the Bridge Engineering Center reporting to the Director II. This center is administratively housed within the Institute for Transportation. The individual will be the direct supervisor of three P&S technical staff, graduate students, undergraduate students and will be expected to work directly with faculty on research principally related to bridge engineering. This person will also be expected to devote a considerable amount of effort to growing sponsored programs for the Center and Institute. As a part of this growth in sponsored programs, the employee will also be expected to promote and advance multi-disciplinary research within InTrans and with cross-disciplinary groups at ISU and beyond. In addition, the individual will be required to teach technical workshops to engineering professionals across the county. The primary foci of this individual is to (1) serve as the Principal Investigator on National, Regional, State, and Local research and (2) to grow the research funding at the Bridge Engineering Center by securing an aggressive and new funding stream.

The successful candidate will find balance between managing existing research projects, developing innovative research concepts, and establishing new lasting sponsor relationships to ensure future funding. In order to be successful in the position, the candidate will possess good management skills, strong communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 6 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 3 years of related experience unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience.

Ph.D. in Structural Engineering.

Experience conducting material and geometrically nonlinear structural analyses using finite element software.

History of publishing scholarly works in high impact journals.

Experience writing competitive proposals.

Experience with instrumentation including strain sensors, deflection transducers, and others.

Experience writing research reports.

Structural engineering laboratory experience including: specimen design, fabrication, and testing.

Experience conducting field testing of structures for response under live load, temperature changes, and other influences.

This position requires the ability to travel in order to carry out the duties of this position and candidates must have access to reliable transportation.
