Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Biotechnology at Iowa State University is currently seeking applications for an Assistant Scientist II to support the Plant Transformation Facility (PTF). The PTF is a core ISU research service facility in the Office of Biotechnology, a unit within the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Office of Biotechnology facilitates and advances programs in research, education, and outreach that contribute to the goals of Iowa State University’s Strategic Plan in the area of Biotechnology.

This position leads the maize and rice genetic transformation services provided by Iowa State University’s PTF as well as collaborates with others on soybean services. The Assistant Scientist II, in consultation with the PTF Manager as needed, plans, implements, and reports all experiments for the maize and rice transformation service pipelines. This position oversees the laboratory production of maize and rice customer service projects: identify events, regenerate, germinate, schedule shipments, and summarize/submit project completions. This position communicates regularly with PTF customers regarding pertinent information about their projects. The incumbent reviews scientific literature in regard to applications of effectively designing and performing research experiments. The person evaluates and assesses all maize and rice transformation experimental data for protocol optimization and compiles data to be reviewed by the PTF Manager for written facility reports.
This position responds to public inquiries about the tissue culture and transformation of maize and rice in a professional and timely manner. This position may be asked by the PTF Manager to co-instruct workshops and classes for faculty researchers and students. The position also authors/co-authors chapters and manuscripts. This individual will participate in laboratory upkeep, equipment maintenance, and ordering.

The successful candidate will have superior organization skills in order to manage multiple, interrelated tasks. The candidate will also possess skills to communicate and work effectively with researchers at all levels (both on- and off-campus) and equipment service personnel. They will have a meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to think autonomously, critically, and creatively. They also shall have the ability to learn new skills as the technologies advance.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

• Degree in agronomy, horticulture, molecular biology, biology, plant pathology, genetics or similar degree.
• Experience in plant tissue culture and transformation.
• Experience handling toxic and hazardous materials.
• Experience with maintenance of standard molecular biology/agronomy laboratory equipment.
• Experience which demonstrates ability to design and/or implement modifications of research equipment.
• Experience which demonstrates knowledge of the configuration of Microsoft PC hardware and operating systems and interfaces with peripheral equipment and devices.

Additional Information

Occasional vehicle use required for reaching off-site field nursery in summer or greenhouse in inclement weather if necessary.
