Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Alumni Association at Iowa State University is seeking to fill the position of Director of Office of Operations. Founded in 1878, the Iowa State University Alumni Association, a 501( C )3 separately incorporated, independent, self-governing, non-profit corporation, has consistently and effectively played a central and important role in enhancing the excellence and stature of Iowa State University and its former and current students. The Alumni Association has been engaging alumni in the life, work, and aspiration of their alma mater and one another for more than a century thus earning the reputation as a trusted and reliable partner for the university and its constituents. The Iowa State University Alumni Association has built an impressive foundation upon which to serve Iowa State University’s more than 250,000 alumni, countless friends and parents, 16,268 faculty and staff, and more then 36,000 students, who make up the Cyclone Community. Today the Association, which is governed by a 28-member board of directors and led by a professional staff of 28, has more than 53,000 members; publishes VISIONS magazine and ISU News Flash; operates the ISU Alumni Center; has an annual operating budget of more than $4 million; has total endowment funds and operating reserves of more than $6 million and $3.2 million in deferred endowment commitments; and operates one of the nation’s largest Student Alumni Associations, as well as comprehensive student leadership programs. Through its dedicated efforts, the Iowa State University Alumni Association is admired as a leader among its cohorts in the Big 12, its land-grant peers, and other institutions nationally.

The primary responsibility for this position is to manage all office operations for the Alumni Association and serve as the Alumni Association’s Human Resource Director. As part of the office operations this person will serve as the IT liaison, be responsible for administrating office policies, plan staff meetings and retreats, supervise the receptionist and associated student workers, and oversee all staff development and recognition activities. As the Alumni Association Human Resources Director this person is responsible for employment searches, hiring, training, resignation/retirements, temporary employees, personnel issues, and overall employee satisfaction. Also included is managing the professional development budget and all activities related to developing professional development plans for staff. He/she also serves as a support for finance.

This position is continuously engaged in numerous projects of varying scales. This position is responsible for selecting all higher education presidential inauguration ceremony appointees who attend and represent the President of Iowa State University at local and national events.

The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent computer skills; excellent customer service skills; effective decision-making skills; the ability to skillfully manage multiple deadlines; and the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals. This position will work with confidential information; therefore, personal integrity is a must. This individual is expected to be an active member of the Alumni Association and project professionalism and sensitivity when dealing with others. This position will work some nights and weekends.
