Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University (www.mse.iastate.edu) invites nominations and applications for the position of Department Chair. The chair is responsible for the scope and effectiveness of the teaching, research and outreach efforts of the department. Candidates are expected to have an exemplary record of achievement in research, teaching and service; to have a demonstrated commitment to achieving excellence through diversity and inclusion; and to have demonstrated professional leadership, including strong communication and team building skills. Appreciation for university-industry collaborations, technology transfer and intellectual property management will be treated as an asset. We seek a dynamic and innovative leader with a bold vision for the future of materials science and engineering.

Required Education and Experience

• PhD, or equivalent qualifications, in materials science engineering or closely related field
• Exemplary record of achievement in research, teaching and service in university, national laboratory or industry at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor
• Evidence of achieving excellence through diversity and inclusion
• Demonstrated ability to lead others to execute a shared vision

Preferred Education and Experience

• Experience directing interdisciplinary programs in education and research
• Budget and personnel management experience
• Experience in fundraising, donor cultivation and stewardship

Department/Program & College Description

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is centrally located on the Iowa State campus with 45,000 square feet of modern teaching and research facilities. The department is nationally recognized for its research and teaching in rare earth and magnetic materials, energy generation and storage, multifunctional materials, advanced metals and ceramics, materials processing, soft matter, biomaterials, nanomaterials, computational materials science, advanced characterization and nondestructive evaluation, and materials genomics. The 22 tenured or tenure-track faculty are well recognized for excellence as measured by numerous high impact publications in top-ranked journals and their reputations in professional societies. The faculty includes a member of the National Academy of Engineering and Nobel Laureate, and a member of the National Academy of Inventors. Annual departmental research expenditures exceed $22 million. Current enrollment includes 268 undergraduate and 63 graduate students. Department faculty also collaborate extensively with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, located on the Iowa State campus. (http://www.mse.iastate.edu/)

The College of Engineering includes eight departments, with over 230 tenure/tenure-track faculty members, and annual research expenditures exceeding $99 million. U.S. News and World Report ranks the college in the top 25 among public universities and is one of the ten largest undergraduate engineering programs in the U.S. Unique facilities at Iowa State include the Ames Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, and interdisciplinary centers of excellence such as the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE), Virtual Reality Application Center (VRAC), Center for Advanced Non-ferrous Structural Alloys, the Nanovaccines Institute, the Office of Biotechnology, the Microelectronics Research Center, the NSF Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals, the NSF IUCRC Center for Bioplastics and Biocomposites, and the Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence (CSAFE).
