Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Industrial Design Department within the College of Design at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a full time, tenured/tenure-track faculty member. Candidates will be considered at the Associate Professor or Full Professor ranks. The successful candidate is expected to make significant contributions to the knowledge base and profile of the program and University through excellence in research and scholarship. Engagement with graduate students is required to support the growth of the Graduate Program. The primary areas of teaching may include industrial design studios as well as lecture courses related to commercial practice, systematic methodology, design for manufacture, strategy, innovation, advanced visualization, systems thinking, service design or industry engagement.

Applicants should be prepared to describe their work in detail and discuss its merits in the context of industrial design at Iowa State University.

Required Education and Experience

MID or MFA in industrial design or related field; or BID or equivalent professional degree in industrial design or related field + 10 years of relevant industry experience.

Background in teaching advance-level courses and mentoring graduate students

In addition applicants must meet the university standards for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor.

Applicants for Professor must have, in addition to the above qualifications, a strong national and international scholarly reputation.

Preferred Education and Experience

- Evidence of mastery in the areas of teaching, scholarship or practice.
- Track record of external funding to support scholarship
- Demonstrated potential to contribute to and thrive in a collaborative academic environment
- Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary research and education projects
- Background teaching studio, lab or other project-based courses
- Documented success in developing and leading research programs and research teams

Department/Program & College Description

Founded in 2010, the Department of Industrial Design is one of the most rapidly growing programs at Iowa State. It has established a strong reputation through collaborative linkages with the Colleges of Engineering and Business and the private sector. Currently, the Department consists of 13 full-time faculty members with backgrounds in Art, Architecture, Interior Design, Digital Media, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Manufacturing and Professional Practice. There are more than 250 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.

Other distinguished departments within the College of Design include Architecture, Art and Visual Culture, Community and Regional Planning, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture. The College of Design is dedicated to all forms of diversity and inclusion, and committed to the expanded role of art and design as an agent of change in society.
