Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Animal Science under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University seeks applicants for an Associate Scientist who will be responsible for coordinating and performing bioinformatics data creation and analysis on an externally funded four year porcine functional genomics project.

This includes coordinating genomic data collection; conducting complex analyses and interpretation of all data; presenting results in seminars and regional, national, and international meetings; and writing articles for publication in lay and scientific journals. The position will participate in data quality control analyses and create a project database. Responsibilities include coordinating and training undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral associates regarding data collection and analysis. Identification of original biological research questions and participating in the development of grant proposals for funding by external institutions will also be a responsibility of this position.

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with strong problem solving capabilities. The candidate will be highly self-motivated, innovative, and have the ability to accurately plan research, perform genomic analyses, and conduct bioinformatics analysis. Furthermore, the candidate will be able to work independently and collaboratively with internal researchers at ISU and researchers externally. Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 2 years of related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

Degree must be in Bioinformatics or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Record of peer-reviewed publication of bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput sequencing data
  • Experience in epigenetic data creation and analysis
  • Training and experience in network data analysis
  • Experience in livestock genome data analysis and annotation
  • Bioinformatics experience post graduate degree.
