Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Graduate College invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of the Graduate College.

The associate dean reports to the dean of the Graduate College and oversees implementation of the college’s vision for degree-program integrity and for equity, access, and academic excellence in post-baccalaureate education and training. Duties include optimizing the academic experience of students and scholars, including those with disabilities; overseeing and serving the university’s directors of graduate education; implementing and assessing initiatives to promote the timely completion of master’s and doctoral degrees and the outcomes tracking of graduates; and serving as the college’s liaison to the university’s Postdoctoral Association and Graduate and Professional Student Senate. The associate dean supervises three P&S staff employees of the Graduate College. Other responsibilities will be negotiated and may include directing the graduate major Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies, other roles to promote interdisciplinary scholarship, and management of a portion of the college’s budget.

The associate dean works closely with graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and their supervisors, the graduate dean, the associate deans for graduate education in other colleges, directors of graduate education and other members of the graduate faculty, and staff across the university who support graduate students and programs. He or she will represent the college when the dean is unavailable to do so, shall possess outstanding interpersonal skills, and be an effective organizer, communicator, and decision-maker. The associate dean will be a valued advisor to, and administrative partner of, the graduate dean. The Graduate College’s engagement with the Council of Graduate Schools, the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools, and other organizations will provide the associate dean with outstanding opportunities for professional development.

Tenured member of the Iowa State faculty; experience advising graduate students.

Preferred Education and Experience

Service as a DOGE; track record of effective professional interactions with diverse coworkers/clients, including persons with disabilities; supervision of postdoctoral scholars.

Additional Information

This position is open to faculty with tenure at Iowa State University. This is a 50% administrative appointment. If the successful applicant is a B-base employee, summer salary will be provided.
