Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Division of Chemical and Biological Sciences with Iowa State University at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.

The duties of the position include the use and possible modification of a nonlinear optical microscope for subdiffraction imaging using coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), and the subsequent application of the microscope to study a variety of samples of relevance to the Department of Energy’s mission. The position also requires contributions to the theoretical understanding of the physical processes involved and the ability to contribute to new methods of data analysis. The position requires the safe use of Class IV laser systems. In addition, direct supervision of graduate students, writing manuscripts, and other scientific reports are key duties for this position.

The successful candidate for this position must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.

Required Education and Experience

• Ph.D. in chemistry or similar physical science must be completed prior to start date.

Preferred Education and Experience

• The successful applicant will have at least 4 years of hands-on experience with nonlinear optical spectroscopy instrumentation and its application as well as experience with CARS spectroscopy.
• The candidate should also have a demonstrated understanding of the theoretical basis behind CARS spectroscopy and a fundamental understand of the statistical analysis procedures in analyzing single-molecule data.
