Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is a $17 million research organization at Iowa State University that includes seven centers and seven programs. InTrans conducts transportation-related research and outreach, and addresses the education and workforce development needs of future transportation professionals. InTrans’ mission is to develop and implement innovative methods, materials, and technologies for improving transportation system efficiency, safety, reliability, and sustainability while improving the learning environment of students, faculty, and staff in transportation-related fields.

The Bridge Engineering Center (BEC) was established in 1988 and has been housed at the Institute for Transportation since 2000. The BEC maintains close working relationships with the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Office of Bridges and Structures. The BEC is searching for an Engineer IV or V to be responsible for coordinating research activities in the area of structural engineering; providing various levels of financial management to research projects; creating and giving presentations to project sponsors and other interested individuals, formulating demonstrations where beneficial; and supervising and assisting Bridge Engineering Center undergraduate and graduate students and research assistants working on research projects.

In addition to the duties above, the Engineer V will manage research activities in the area of structural engineering; manage the development of data reduction algorithms including conceptualization, writing of software, and testing and debugging; and assist in supervising the work of P&S technical staff, taking responsibility for ensuring assigned activities are completed accurately and in a timely manner,

The successful candidate will possess good management skills, strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues. In addition, the successful candidate will possess the ability to write and publish publications and journals.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

The above requirements are for an Engineer IV.

Engineer V: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience.

Degree for either position must be in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience in bridge engineering.

Experience conducting field work related to structural engineering.

Experience writing technical reports.

Experience with instrumentation including strain sensors, deflection transducers, and others.

History of publishing scholarly works in high impact journals.

Experience conducting structural analyses using commercial software.

Structural engineering laboratory experience including: specimen design, fabrication, and testing.

Experience in conducting field testing of structures for response under live load, temperature changes, and other influences.

Experience interpreting field collected behavior data.

This position requires the ability to travel in order to carry our the duties of this position and candidates must have access to reliable transportation.
